Osterferien 2025 - Eintrag 1 - Quatsch mit Soße

(english below)

(Gute Nachricht Bibel 2018)

"[...] aber der Körper schwach." (Neues Leben Die Bibel)

Also!

Man darf gehen!

7 Stunden laufen? Du spinnst doch? You stupid? Wtf?

Selber stupid!

So.

-------------------------------------------------------

Before I start stupidly scrolling Instagram while eating muesli in the evening, I might as well write a blog, even though I'm not on a fancy trip right now, but simply on Fehmarn - my favorite island. And if anyone has a little break from Abi correcting with this entry, I'm happy to be of service. This is also a service blog. (Unfortunately, no one will probably understand the allusion to the podcast “Nobody has to be a celebrity.” in which Elena and Lars always like to emphasize that they are not a gossip and glamour magazine, but also a service podcast. That's exactly how I wanted to write a service blog.

Service: distraction.

I would like to start with a quote from the Bible, Einheitsübersetzung 2016:

“The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Interestingly, other translations say:

“[...] but your human nature is weak.” (Good News Bible 2018)

“[...] but the body is weak.” (New Life The Bible)

and especially funny:

“Hang in there and don't fall asleep, otherwise you won't be able to cope with the next few days either. Your soul actually wants that too, but your body can't always cope.” (Volxbible)

And what do I say to all this?

NONSENSE WITH GRAVY

Now I've gone way out on a limb, how dare I contradict the wondrous Bible, which is full of literal truths? And above all: who actually says that the Bible is to be understood literally? - Too many strange people, unfortunately. But that's another topic.

So! How do I come to contradict the sentence “The spirit is willing, but the body is weak” today?

Because it is the mind that is weak and I came across this twice today.

Once in ZEIT WISSEN 04 2024 in an article about things. The French sociologist Bruno Latour ascribed agency to things. Behavior is rarely purely intrinsically motivated. Our actions are complex, a network of very different elements. “When I walk past a traffic light, it triggers me to either stop and wait or to move on.” Our consciousness is not isolated in our brain, but many of our thoughts are a result of external impulses. How much autonomy do we really have over everything that surrounds us? If we understand what things want from us, we have the freedom to decide against them.

The mind is weaker than the body. My body rarely comes up with the idea of wanting to eat potato chips on its own. Maybe when I've lost too much salt after a long sports session with lots of sweating. However, if my mind notices the bag of potato chips, it recognizes what the potato chips want from me, namely to be eaten - oops oops oops, I don't have to have a physical deficit to feel like eating potato chips and reach for them.

Body 1 - mind 0

Second encounter: “The body is stronger than the mind” appeared to me in an Instareel. Not everything on Insta is stupid, and sometimes it's nice when someone says things that you haven't yet been able to formulate yourself. The reel (can't find it anymore) went something like this: a young ultrarunner said, “The body is stronger than the mind.” and then enumerated how she tricks her head when it says, “Oh, I'm in pain.” - You endured the pain for the last minute, so you will endure it for the next minute. And possibly every second.

I know similar feelings: Oh, my head is tired, but my legs aren't, if you feel your legs carefully.

Baam. I put it out on Insta, so I can put it out here too: I've been dreaming of being able to run 50km for a while now. Oh, how great that would be. Why not a marathon? And this is where my head dumps the truck: Elite, performance, I have to do this/that, this/pace, this/pineapple. At 50km, I don't have that in my head, but rather: This is an ultra run - I MUST run slowly, in zone 2, and I MUST eat right from the start, yay, I'm allowed to eat the whole time and I'm even supposed to. And hey! You're allowed to walk! And you're allowed to take a longer break to eat in between. Sure, you're on the road for 6 or 7 hours.

Oh my God!

And here it comes, the spirit that weakens: I'll never manage that? 7 hours of walking? Are you crazy? You stupid? Wtf?

Stupid yourself! My mind also used to think that I could NEVER run 10km. Now that's no longer a thing. My mind also used to think that I could NEVER run a half marathon. I managed that too. Why does my mind actually lack imagination? Isn't it usually so creative? Okay, now we're digressing into “basic trust” and trust in our own abilities, let's not go there.

But here too, the body is stronger than the mind.

Body 2 - mind 0.

So.

This week I started a training plan for my 50km dream. If everything
